Services Provided by the New York Irish Center

The New York Irish Center provides a range of services to the Irish and non-Irish community in the New York tri-state area, including....

Information/Resource Center

We make available information about existing services and resources and direct people to the appropriate agency or place for their needs. When a needed resource is not available or inadequate. we will provide it from our own resources. Please click here to see the listing of other organizations and agencies that provide specific services to the Irish community on our "Information" page. You can also call the main number listed above, or click on the "Contact Us" button on the left to request information on services provided by affiliated agencies in the tri-state area.

Helplines

We provide two helplines for the community:

1) a general helpline: it is vital to have an Irish Center where people in the community know they can get any help they may want or need, day or night. We provide confidential assistance to anyone who contacts our toll-free Helpline 1-877-ERIN-HELP (1-877-374-6435).

and

2) the Senior Helpline (in conjunction in the Bronx with Emerald Isle Immigration and the Aisling Center).  This project is directly funded by the Irish Goverment, and involves Seniors helping Seniors.  Senior volunteers are on hand for any Senior in our community who feels isolated and just needs someone to talk to.  The project is modeled on a successful initiative in Ireland.  The helpline currently operates Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10am to noon.   The  toll-free Senior Helpline is 1-877-997-5777.

We can also be contacted confidentially online  here, where you can learn more about our Senior Helpline.

Social Activities

In addition, the Center hosts regular and one-off social events, including the Seniors Lunch Club, Mothers And Toddlers, Irish céili dancing, tin whistle classes, "25" card nights, Irish plays, and more. Please see our "Center Events" page for more information.

Social Place

The Center provides a range of facilities for formal and informal get-togethers. On the ground floor, we have a large multi-purpose room with a stage and hardwood floor (perfect for dancing!), fully-equipped kitchen and restrooms. This space can be reserved for private functions and parties (birthdays, wedding anniversaries, baptisms/christenings, etc.). We also have a function room in our basement level, which we call the "Library", and which also has a hardwood/raised floor for dancing. Please click here to reserve either of these rooms for your next function!

Also in the basement level, we have an Internet Cafe with 5 computers linked to the Internet where young and old alike can surf the web and email friends and family. Each computer comes with Microsoft Office for updating and printing resumes, fliers, etc., and includes Parental Control software so the little ones can enjoy a safe web browsing experience. We also have Wireless Internet access throughout the Center for those of you who want to connect to the web using your own laptop. Our Internet Cafe also has extremely comfy chairs!

We are also in the final planning phase for our Irish Tea Room, where light meals, coffee, tea, cake, alcohol-free beer and cocktails will be served, and where parents can bring their children to watch satellite TV with Irish sports (via Setanta Sports USA channel) and enjoy other activities in an alcohol-free environment. Check back soon for an update on when the Irish Team Room is open to the public.

Personal and Family Support

We also provide, either directly or through other agencies or individuals, many different kinds of personal or family support. We only recommend services where the professionals have a thorough understanding of Irish culture. values and attitudes and the necessary skills for working with the Irish community. The support include: individual, group and family counseling as well as support groups, where appropriate, for bereavement, suicide, personal or family problems, career change, returning home, etc. 12-step groups are always welcome! Please call the Center at (718) 482-0909, or email us at info@newyorkirishcenter.org, or fill our Contact form, for more information.
