"Music in the Mountains"
The Irish Catskills and Traditional Music |
Saturday January 16th 2010
Brendan Dolan,
of New York University's School of Irish Studies, a
renowned traditional musician and teacher, hosted a talk
on the role of traditional music as a reflection of the
tastes of the Irish and Irish-Americans who created the
phenomenon of the Irish Catskills, at the Center on
Saturday evening Jan 16th. The talk was accompanied by
a large array of photos tracing the changing face of the
Irish Catskills from the 1920s to the present.
Fine traditional Irish music was provided by The
Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra,
featuring: Donie Carroll, Don Meade, Liz Kennedy, Gail
Neely, Linda Hood among others. A large crowd
packed the Main Hall to see and hear the history of the
Irish footprint in the Catskill Mountains.
This was
the first of a series of lectures and talks that we are
planning at the Center here in 2010, under the title
"Know Ireland Better". Stay tuned to this website for
more details as they become available.
The New York Irish Center will be donating a large
portion of the proceeds from this event to relief
efforts in Haiti.
