Queens Borough President Helen Marshall came to visit on March 2nd and witnessed first hand our Wednesday afternoon Senior Lunch Club.  A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer was also by recently.  Jimmy, whose grandmother hails from Enniscorthy, County Wexford, is a long time supporter of the New York Irish Center.

The Center has recently become a nesting ground for the local Meet Up group:
Little In The City.

There is great demand in the neighborhood for the needs of young parents and their crawling toddlers. The Center is happy to provide valuable "crawl" space.

If you're a parent with a toddling child in Long Island City, you should
join Little In The City.

The Úll Mór (Big Apple) branch of Comhaltas Ceolteoirí na hÉireann holds a traditional Irish music and dancing seisiún at the Center on a monthly basis.  Lots of musicians, singers and dancers come down to join in this late-afternoon session of great trad.  Organized by Cathy Hornberger, the Craobh Úll Mór CCÉ look forward to their next seisiún at the Center at 4pm on Sunday March 20th.

Úll Mór Seisiún Series "Revival" is a success!

A seisiún (pronounced sesh-oon) is the Gaelic/Irish word for 'session', and is a free-flowing jam of Irish traditional music and dance.

Update: our elevator project is just weeks away from approval by New York City's building authority, after which we can schedule the work to begin.

Did you know...?

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

NIALL MULLIGAN
TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSICIAN &
FIDDLE TEACHER

Niall Mulligan
Every Thursday night the sounds of traditional Irish airs can be heard coming from the Center's Library.  Niall Mulligan, a native of Antrim, has been teaching fiddle with us for several years, under the umbrella of the Mulligan-Quinn  Comhaltas Branch, where he also teaches in Mineola, Nassau County.  Niall performed with the 1997 Comhaltas Tour Of Britain, as both a fiddler-player and dancer, and later with Irish Band More Power To Your Elbow,  Riverdance the Show, and also Riverdance on Broadway.  In the short space of time he has been teaching here, he has successfully produced qualifiers for the prestigious Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann which was held in County Cavan, including the under-15 Fiddle section. Niall teaches all levels of traditional fiddle to all ages, from  beginners to advanced students. Niall is an extremely gifted musician in his own right and the Center is delighted to have him.
