WINTER/SPRING 2010
ST. PATRICK'S MONTH
The big day of course is on the 17th, but around here we like to call this time of year "St. Patrick's Month" because celebrations and parades go on all through March, and then some.  So, as we reflect on the wonderful life of St. Patrick and take special pride this time of year in the enormous contributions the Irish have made to New York and the United States of America, all of us at the New York Irish Center would like to wish all our friends and supporters a very, very

 Happy St. Patrick's Day!

IRISH LANGUAGE COURSE FOR KIDS
We are pleased to announce that Elaine Ní Bhraonáin will be teaching an Irish language course for younger children at the Center starting in April.  Elaine comes to us with a wealth of experience working with this age group, and will of course be continuing her highly-praised courses for kids at the Irish Arts Center in Manhattan. It is the opinion of the New York Irish Center that the Irish language (Gaeilge) is a critical component of the Irish culture and identity and thus we are doing all we can to encourage young children to embrace it. If you think you would like one of your kids to join Elaine's class here at our conveniently located Center, right by the East River in Queens, further details are:

RECENT EVENTS AT THE CENTER
In January a large crowd took a trip down memory lane with Brendan Dolan in his lecture Music In The Mountains: The Irish Catskills and Traditional Irish Music.

In February a bitterly cold night didn't deter a gathering from coming to listen to Irish Echo Publisher Máirtín Ó'Muilleoir lead a discussion of his work and the state of the Irish language in a global context.

IN THE MEDIA AND OTHER NEWS
Read a profile of Executive Director Paul Finnegan in the Irish Echo.

Kudos to the Center for
extending a warm welcome to the Club Leabhar Nua Eabhrac.

Finally,
Pat McGowan was Grand Marshal and Paul Finnegan was Gael of the Year for the Rockaway's St. Patrick's Day Parade - the second largest such parade in New York State.  Wonderful weather and a huge turnout made for a fantastic day on March  6th.
ABOUT THE NEW YORK IRISH CENTER
With its typically Irish Céad Míle Fáile (one hundred thousand welcomes) the New York Irish Center is a home to all who wish to connect to the Irish and Irish American community in the New York Tri-State area.  Located in a beautiful East River waterfront neighborhood, just one stop on the subway from Grand Central, right at the exit of the Midtown tunnel, the Center offers a wide range of cultural program for all ages, among them Irish language, dance and music classes, céilís (Irish dances), and a Wednesday Senior Lunch and Social Club, to name just a few activities.  You can review the current regular schedule here. The Center also serves as a regular meeting place for many Irish organizations in the region, making it a focal point for the community. The New York Irish Center is an initiative of the Irish immigrant and Irish American communities of New York. It is a tremendous example of 'giving back' and sharing, the very spirit that has made the New York Irish strong for generations.
