- Autumn/Fall 2008
Due to the
tremendous growth in organizations and groups using the New York
Irish Center's facilities, we have had to convert previous
rental space to accommodate our public. This means reduced
rental income for the Center and so we are planning an exciting
series of fundraising events to make up for this lost income.
Through these fundraisers, we are offering you top class Irish
entertainment and the opportunity to meet old friends and make
new ones. The social dimension is always important to us, so if
you could please spread the word about our events, we would be
most grateful.
Visit our website -
www.nyirish.org - or email
info@newyorkirishcenter.org for updated information on our
events and programs.
Upcoming Events @ the Center
An Evening of John B. Keane,
from Listowel, Co. Kerry, Ireland
A fundraiser for the Irish Center. One of Ireland’s best loved
writers is credited with more than 30 plays, 4 novels, musicals
and much more. Lartigue Theater Producer, Danny Hannon, has put
together this show as a tribute to John B. Keane’s acclaimed
first play, "Letters of a Matchmaker". The actors have kindly
donated their time and resources to come over here, because they
know we have staged some of Mr. Keane’s works and they believe
in our work here for the community.
Texas Hold'em Fundraiser

movie "21" and fancy your chances as a card shark? Come down to
the Center on Wednesday, October 15th @ 8:00pm SHARP to try your
luck! Entry: $50 (Unlimited Buy-in for First Hour); Half Chips:
$25. Register by Sunday October 12th!!

Blinded by the Light Audition
On Thursday, October
16th we will be auditioning for our next play, “Blinded by the
Light” written by Dermot Bolger. Dermot is one of a newer group
of writers from Dublin who have that great talent of bringing to
light on stage the wonderful characters for which Dublin is
famous. If you liked Roddy Doyle’s “The Commitments” you will
love this one. It is scheduled for early January.
We need to recruit 11 male characters to act in the play –
Dublin accent an advantage! Why not let your hidden talent come
alive on our stage!?
Samhain, Halloween Spooky Party
Monster Halloween
Costumes, Roaring 20’s, Vampires, Frankenstein, whatever
Halloween means to you! Prizes for “Best Ghosty Garbs ‘n’ Batty
Duds”. A fun evening to be had by all! Spooky music playing with
pumpkins ‘n’ apples, nuts, ‘n’ pies to sink your fangs in and be
and devoured! Do you have the best Costume ever??
Talent Competition - November 23rd
Finally, the Center is
organizing a new Talent Competition for November 23rd. There
will be various categories and a winner in each. We are looking
for amateur talent as individuals and groups, in Irish
traditional areas of drama, song and spoken word (recitations or
poetry, etc. The audience will decide the winners but they will
have a Panel of experts to guide them. So tell all those
wonderful people you have heard in your home or local pub that
this is their opportunity for Broadway! Again, don’t forget to
bring yourself!.
On-Going Events @ the Center
Care-giver & Toddler Group
This group meets every
Monday from 2pm to 5pm, and every Thursday from 10:30am to 2pm. We
provide a large space for your child to run around and play with toys. A
nice reprieve from the cold of the nearest park! Come for mutual support
and fun for the children.
Senior Lunch and Social
Club
We provide a weekly social life for our
senior group every Wednesday from 1pm to 4’ish! While meeting old
friends, playing cards, chatting and making new friends, and generally
feeling welcome, we provide a free lunch to all who attend. If you are
the computer geek type, you can while away the afternoon catching up on
e-mails and corresponding with relatives miles away, or enjoy your
‘soaps’ on TV in our café area. We are starting a senior ‘book club’ so
you can also enjoy our eclectic library.
Line
Dancing
You have the opportunity
to practice your lessons more on the first Saturday of every other
month. Please give Liz a call at 718-482-0909 if you are unsure of which
months this fun event runs. Line Dancing is becoming more popular as
there are quite a few people who like country music.
Monthly Céilí
Our monthly Céilí can be
enjoyed by all on the 4th Saturday of each month. Beginners get a lesson
from 7pm to 8pm, and then have the opportunity to join in the fun for
the rest of the night, which includes delicious home-made brown soda
bread! Don’t miss this rare treat! All are welcome.
"25" Card Night
The Center hosts a "25"
card game on the last Friday of every month on the ground floor meeting
room, starting at 6:30pm. Entry fee is just $10 per person, with half of
the proceeds going to the winner's pot, and the other half going to the

The Center is kept running
by people who come out and support our events and activities. We are
very fortunate to have individuals and businesses that will not only
support us themselves but have helped to spread the word about what we
do here for the community. We also have to thank the many people that
help run our activities by donating so much of their free time to the
events here at the Center. It would be impossible to do everything we
need to without their readiness to give up an afternoon or evening to
help us.
If you would like to
support the programs and services that the Center provides to the Irish
community, please visit our online donation page at
http://www.newyorkirishcenter.org/donate.htm. Or if you'd like to
donate some "sweat equity" (i.e. volunteer), please send an email to
info@newyorkirishcenter.org
or visit
http://www.newyorkirishcenter.org/contact.htm.
Go raibh míle maith agat!
